By industry and situation

KTG: insured income during sickness

Sickness daily allowance insurance can replace an agreed proportion of insured salary after a waiting period. Benefit duration, insured groups, exclusions and notification duties depend on the contract. It does not automatically pay all replacement-staff costs.

UVG: compulsory accident cover for employees

Employees generally require occupational accident insurance. Those working at least eight hours a week for the same employer generally also have non-occupational accident cover. Suva jurisdiction must be clarified before comparing private insurers.

UVGZ: consider supplementary benefits

Supplementary accident insurance may provide agreed extensions to UVG, such as salary coverage beyond statutory limits or other benefits. Scope depends on the product.

Waiting periods and employer obligations

A longer waiting period requires sufficient liquidity for the initial period. Employment contracts, salary-continuation duties and any applicable collective agreement must be considered.

Three everyday business situations

Extended absence due to sickness

An employee is ill for several weeks. Check the proportion of salary insured under KTG, the waiting period and the benefit duration. The business needs a funding plan for the period before insurance benefits start.

Part-time work and a leisure accident

An employee works six hours a week for you. Occupational accident cover from this job alone is not sufficient for leisure accidents. At least eight hours a week with the same employer generally also provides non-occupational accident cover.

Additional accident benefits

A business wants to review benefits beyond basic UVG cover. The required UVGZ options and the groups of people to be insured must be specified.

Simplified examples. Actual entitlement depends on statutory requirements and the agreed insurance terms.

Insurance requirements depend on activities, legal form, employment and any applicable collective agreement. Not every new business needs the same cover.

Frequently asked questions about KTG, UVG and UVGZ

Is sickness daily allowance insurance compulsory for every business?

There is no general statutory KTG requirement. A collective employment agreement or contractual arrangement may require insurance. Salary-continuation obligations need to be checked separately.

Who pays the salary during the KTG waiting period?

The waiting period delays the start of insurance benefits. It does not automatically remove the employer’s salary obligations. The law, employment contract and any applicable collective agreement determine those obligations.

Does KTG always pay 80 per cent for two years?

No. Check the insured proportion and benefit duration in the policy. In particular, KTG under the Insurance Contract Act (VVG) sets these contractually; limitations and exclusions may apply.

Does UVGZ replace compulsory accident insurance?

No. UVGZ supplements UVG cover with agreed additional benefits. Appropriate options depend on salaries, insured groups and the desired level of benefits.

What should guide the choice of waiting period?

Consider the absence costs the business can fund itself, its salary obligations and the available options. A lower premium alone is not a sufficient basis for a decision.

What information is needed for an initial enquiry?

Provide your industry, employee numbers, payroll, preferred start date and current KTG/UVG arrangements. Any applicable collective agreement and preferred waiting period are also useful. Please do not send diagnoses or medical certificates through the enquiry form.

Is KTG the same as UVG?

No. KTG concerns sickness-related loss of earnings; UVG concerns accidents and occupational diseases.

Can a policy be changed during ongoing sickness claims?

This requires careful review of ongoing benefits, acceptance terms and potential gaps before cancellation.
